Hwaseong Haenggung (Temporary Palace)

Suwon Hwaseong is a planned city constructed during the late Joseon Dynasty under King Jeongjo's reign, with Hwaseong Haenggung (Temporary Palace) at its heart. A Haenggung is a temporary palace used by kings when traveling or staying in provincial areas. Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung is the largest among the remaining Haenggung in Korea, and its historical significance reflects the political, military, and cultural development of late Joseon.

1. Background of Construction

The construction of Suwon Hwaseong and Haenggung was initiated when King Jeongjo moved his father Crown Prince Sado’s tomb from Yangju to Suwon. Driven by filial piety and the desire to revitalize the Joseon Dynasty, King Jeongjo strongly promoted this project, which transformed Suwon into a new political and military hub. He envisioned Suwon as an "ideal city," using Hwaseong to strengthen central authority, bolster national defense, and promote economic development.

2. Architecture of Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung

The Haenggung was built between 1794 and 1796, and it became a frequent residence for King Jeongjo. He handled political affairs, supervised military training, and used it as a strategic military base for the protection of Hwaseong.

Unlike permanent palaces, Haenggung had a simpler yet efficient structure. Some of the main buildings include:

  • Bongsudang (奉壽堂): The hall where King Jeongjo held a grand banquet to celebrate his mother, Lady Hyegyeong's, 60th birthday. It is one of the most significant buildings in the Haenggung.
  • Nangnamheon (樂南軒): A space where King Jeongjo held meetings or took breaks. Located in a special position facing south, it offers a view of the entire Haenggung.
  • Yuyeotaek (留如宅): The royal sleeping quarters.

3. Historical Significance

  • Symbol of Filial Piety and Political Innovation: Through the construction of Hwaseong, King Jeongjo symbolically expressed his deep filial piety towards Crown Prince Sado, and it also reflected his political philosophy aimed at the stability and progress of the Joseon Dynasty.
  • Integration of Urban Planning and Defense: Hwaseong and the Haenggung were designed with military defense in mind. The fortress served as a bastion, and the Haenggung functioned as a political center, illustrating King Jeongjo's strategic efforts to strengthen national defense and maintain control over the provinces.
  • Economic Development: The construction of Suwon Hwaseong contributed to economic growth in the surrounding areas. The development of commerce and industry around the Haenggung helped Suwon thrive, making it an iconic example of late Joseon economic progress.

4. Cultural Heritage

Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung is highly regarded as a prime example of Joseon architecture. It reflects King Jeongjo’s focus on scientific advancement and practicality, which set it apart from traditional palaces. The Haenggung continued to serve as a residence for many kings and remained a vital political center until the late Joseon period.

5. Modern Significance

Today, Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is recognized as a key historical and cultural tourist destination in Korea. It represents more than just an architectural achievement; it symbolizes the political, economic, military, and cultural advancements of late Joseon.
