The name Saseongam (四聖庵) literally means “the hermitage where four holy monks (聖人) stayed.” These four are typically identified as the renowned monks Wonhyo, Uisang, Doseon, and Jingak (or Jingam) from the late Silla to early Goryeo period.

Saseongam is a small hermitage located on the slopes of Mt. Osan in Munch’eok-myeon, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do. It is believed to have been founded between the end of the Silla Dynasty and the early Goryeo Dynasty.

It is known as a place where eminent monks of the time attained enlightenment and practiced asceticism, and was also praised by Doseon Guksa for its outstanding feng shui.

There are small rest areas, miniature stone pagodas, and cultural relics (such as steles) along the way, so taking a leisurely pace while looking around is recommended.

The Saseongam Grounds

Upon arrival at the hermitage, the first thing you’ll notice is the series of halls and structures perched on the rocky cliff. The sight of the buildings blending into the cliff is truly striking.

Within the hermitage, there are various Buddhist halls and living quarters. The most notable buildings include the main worship hall where monks hold services (similar to a Daeungjeon), and Saseongjeon (四聖殿), dedicated to the four great monks who practiced here.

Standing in the cliff-edge hall, you can look out through the windows to see the vast panorama of Gurye’s fields, the Seomjin River, and even the ridges of Jirisan in the distance.

The Cliff Observatory (Viewing Point)

One of the most awe-inspiring spots for visitors is the viewing platform or the edge of the cliff near the hermitage, offering a bird’s-eye view.

You can see the entirety of Gurye County and the far-off ridges of Jirisan in a sweeping panorama. On clear days, the sky, mountains, and river merge into a grand scenic view.

It’s also worth planning a visit at sunrise or sunset. At sunrise, watch the gradual illumination of Jirisan and the Gurye plains, and at sunset, the glow over the Seomjin River is spectacular.

Saseongam Rocks and Legends

The rocky cliffs around the hermitage feature unique geological formations, with small caves, crevices, and naturally formed rock towers.

Legends say that in ancient times, eminent monks meditated or practiced Zen in these crevices—known today as “meditation rocks” or “prayer caves.”

Some rocks are said to resemble animals, earning them local nicknames. Keep an eye out for informational signs or ask local guides for more intriguing stories.

Iljumun and Temple Gate Area

At the entrance of the temple grounds, you’ll see the Iljumun (一柱門), the traditional one-pillar gate, and intermediate gates along the way. There are also small rest areas, making them nice spots for taking photos or a short break.

These gates and their surroundings are especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves change color, and in spring when cherry blossoms and other flowers are in full bloom.

Transportation: It’s easiest to get there by car, but note that parking can be limited. On weekends or during peak seasons, arrive early. If using public transportation, you can take a bus or taxi from Gurye-eup to Saseongam.

Weather: Being located on a cliff, Saseongam can be prone to sudden weather changes. In winter, the wind can be quite strong, so be sure to stay warm.
